A Wedding Abroad, with the Groom Taking the Lead

Some grooms want to be involved in much more than turning up to say “I do”. When we organised weddings abroad at YachtWedding, we met men who genuinely enjoyed taking part in the preparations. They wanted to help shape a day that belonged to both of them.

Some grooms want to be involved in much more than turning up to say “I do”. When we organised weddings abroad at YachtWedding, we met men who genuinely enjoyed taking part in the preparations. They wanted to help shape a day that belonged to both of them.

Choosing the destination and hotel, arranging flights, planning trips and activities — for some grooms, that is half the fun. He might even offer to arrange the bride’s hairstylist. Why not? It is his wedding too.

A wedding abroad can also be a chance to shape the day around what the two of you want. If a big reception, a seating plan or elaborate decorations are not part of that picture, you can leave them out. You might travel just the two of you, bring your children or invite a few of the people closest to you. That can leave more time for each other and for the experiences you have chosen to share.

Of course, the wedding will not organise itself. There is still the ceremony to arrange, travel and accommodation to plan, and perhaps guests to look after. An experienced organiser can help with the practical work, but cannot decide for you what kind of day you want.

For a groom who does not see himself standing stiffly through a formal ceremony while others make all the plans, a wedding on the beach may be more his style. He can bring some of his own personality to the day, without following traditions that neither partner really wants.

What matters most is the two of you. Not perfect decorations or a packed programme for guests, but the time you spend together and the memories you make. It is your wedding first and foremost.

And when the groom looks back on everything they planned together, he can feel proud of his part in it. He was not just another guest at his own wedding. He helped make it happen.

Here’s to grooms who enjoy the preparations — and to couples who can relax and enjoy the day they have made their own.
