You’ve found someone who makes you happy, someone you want to share your life with. Wedding rings can be a beautiful symbol of the promises you make to each other.

If you’re getting married abroad, though, there’s more to think about than how your rings look. You’ll want time to choose them, find a comfortable fit, get them safely to your destination and make sure they’re in the right hands when the ceremony begins. Even something this small deserves a little planning.

Choosing Your Wedding Rings

Visiting a jeweller together can be a lovely part of preparing for your wedding. You can look at different designs, try them on and discover which shapes and widths actually feel comfortable on your fingers.

That doesn’t mean buying your rings online is necessarily a bad idea. What matters is knowing who you’re buying from, how you’ll check the size, when the rings will arrive and what the seller’s arrangements are for returns or alterations. If you’re ordering something made especially for you, or having it engraved, it’s worth asking about those details before you commit.

Whichever way you shop, we’d suggest choosing your rings and checking their fit before you leave for your wedding. You probably won’t want to spend your time away looking for a jeweller, and there may not be enough time for last-minute adjustments.

Setting a Budget for Your Wedding Rings

Before you start trying on everything in sight, decide how much you’d like to spend. And, perhaps more importantly, where your absolute limit lies.

There are so many beautiful rings to choose from. The trouble is, there’s almost always another lovely design, a little extra sparkle or something just beyond the budget. A skilled jeweller can make it all sound wonderfully tempting, too.

Your wedding rings should make you happy, not leave you worrying about the rest of your wedding plans.

Finding Your Own Style

Your rings can be identical, complement each other or look completely different. One of you might love a simple, smooth band, while the other prefers a stone, a matt finish or a more distinctive shape. You don’t even have to choose the same colour or metal.

If either of you wears an engagement ring, you might also want to see how the wedding band will look and sit alongside it. But there’s no rule saying everything must match perfectly.

Choose what feels right for each of you. After all, these are rings you’ll hopefully enjoy wearing long after the wedding day.

Wedding Ring Metals and Colours

Gold is a classic choice, whether you prefer yellow, white or rose gold. You might also consider platinum, silver or steel. Your tastes and the way you plan to wear your ring will help you decide.

Colour isn’t the only consideration, though. Different metals and designs vary in durability, the care they need and whether they can be altered later.

A plain band may be easier to resize than a ring with stones set all the way around it. Some materials may not allow conventional resizing at all. So before you make your choice, ask your jeweller what would be possible with the particular ring you love, including repairs or replacing a stone if necessary.

Ring Width, Profile and Fit

Two rings labelled with the same size can feel surprisingly different when you try them on. The width matters, as does the profile — whether the band is fairly flat, rounded or more substantial.

Remember that you’re choosing something you may wear every day, not only for the few minutes of your ceremony. It should feel comfortable without being so loose that it could slip off.

It may be warmer at your wedding destination than at home, and temperature changes can affect how snugly a ring fits. But that doesn’t mean you should automatically buy a larger size. A tight ring can be uncomfortable, while one that’s too loose might be easy to lose. Try on the design you’ve chosen and discuss the fit with your jeweller.

Engraving Your Wedding Rings

You might like to have your partner’s name, your initials, a few meaningful words, the place you’re getting married or your wedding date engraved inside your rings.

Imagine an inscription reading Mauritius, 22 February 2022. A few simple words and a date can bring back a wonderful memory of where you said your vows.

There’s just one detail we’d think carefully about before engraving it too far in advance: the date itself.

Even with the venue booked and everything planned, life can get in the way. An injury, a cancelled flight or unforeseen circumstances may mean moving the wedding to a different day.

Before the date is engraved, ask your jeweller when you need to confirm the wording and whether it could be changed afterwards. Sometimes it’s sensible to wait a little longer before adding the date, provided the jeweller’s schedule and your departure date allow it.

Travelling with Your Wedding Rings

How do you get something so small, and so important, safely to your wedding?

Our advice is simple: keep the rings with you. Keep them securely in their original box or a dedicated jewellery travel case and, if you’re flying, take them in your hand luggage rather than a checked suitcase. Checked bags can be delayed, go missing or arrive somewhere other than your destination.

Rings are easy to misplace in the rush of travelling. Check exactly where you’ve packed them before you leave and find somewhere secure to keep them once you arrive. It’s also worth checking your airline’s rules for hand luggage.

Who Will Look After the Rings on the Day?

Here’s one more little detail that’s worth settling before the wedding: who will actually have the rings?

Depending on your ceremony, it could be your wedding coordinator, someone in your wedding party or another person you trust. Agree in advance who’s keeping them safe and who’ll hand them over when the time comes. You don’t want the ceremony to begin with everyone wondering where the ring box has gone.

And perhaps you’d love a photograph of your rings resting in the sand, with the sea in the background. It’s a beautiful idea — just make sure a wave doesn’t carry them away. Losing such a precious reminder while trying to photograph it would be a terrible shame.

Wedding Ring Tattoos and Other Symbols

Perhaps traditional rings aren’t for you at all. You might prefer tattooed bands, or another symbol that’s meaningful to you both. That’s a personal choice.

If you’d still like to exchange something during your ceremony, talk to your officiant or coordinator about how that could work. There’s no reason to buy temporary placeholder rings just because someone suggests the wedding wouldn’t be complete without them. What matters is what you want and what is appropriate for your particular ceremony.

Whatever your rings look like, we hope you’ll wear them with pride, love and a smile. And if you choose another symbol instead, may it bring back the same happy memory of the day you promised to share your lives.
