Honeymoon Flights, Connections and Airport Transfers: Make the First Day Count

Your flight is due to land at noon. In your imagination, you're already barefoot on the beach, looking out at the turquoise sea. But first there are bags to collect, a journey to the hotel and, perhaps, a wait before you can get into your room.

Landing in paradise isn't the same as reaching your hotel. When choosing your honeymoon flights, it's worth looking beyond the ticket price and arrival time to the whole journey to your hotel.

Is an earlier arrival always better?

Landing in the morning can be lovely. You have most of the day ahead of you and might even fit in a swim or a walk along the beach. The catch is that your room may not be ready. Some hotels will store your luggage and let you use certain facilities before check-in; others offer fewer options. And after an overnight flight, you may not be in the mood to do much anyway.

A later arrival isn't necessarily a mistake just because you won't reach the hotel until dinner. It depends on the fare, the length of your stay, whether you're paying for a night you'll barely use, and how comfortable the journey feels.

Think about your flight home, too. A late departure might sound like a bonus day, but only if you know when you have to leave your room and what you'll do in the hours before your transfer. Ask when your room will be ready and when you'll need to check out.

Flight connections: not a race, not an endurance test

On a long-haul honeymoon, you may need to change planes. Too little time between flights can mean a stressful dash through the airport. By the time you've left the first aircraft, found the next gate and passed any required checks, your connection may feel uncomfortably close. On the other hand, a very long layover can leave you exhausted before you've even reached your destination.

There isn't one ideal connection time for every airport. Terminals, routes, baggage arrangements and the way your flights are booked all make a difference.

One important distinction is whether your connecting flights are on one booking or you've bought separate tickets. With separate flights — sometimes called a self-transfer — you may have to collect and check in your bags again and go through further controls. If your first flight is delayed, you may not have the same assistance with the onward journey. Check the conditions for your actual itinerary before paying.

And if your connection involves several hours of waiting, see whether the airport has a comfortable lounge or quiet zone where you can rest. You don't necessarily have to spend the whole time sitting by the departure gate.

You've landed in Mauritius. You're still not at the hotel.

Imagine arriving in Mauritius after a long flight. Surely all that's left is the drive to your resort. You board a shared shuttle bus with guests staying at several different hotels.

First stop. A few people get off, while someone searches for a suitcase. You move on to the next hotel. Another stop, another wait. Someone needs a bathroom break. Then you're off to yet another resort.

And there you are, still on the bus. The beach you flew all this way for will have to wait a little longer.

When the former wedding-travel company YachtWedding planned trips, it paid just as much attention to what happened after landing: would couples go straight to their hotel, or stop at several resorts along the way? Your flight ticket won't tell you that.

Of course, not every shared transfer visits a long list of hotels, and not every drive from the airport takes forever. The location of your resort, the route and the number of stops all matter. It's worth finding out how your transfer works before you fly, rather than after you've landed.

Is a private airport transfer worth paying extra for?

A private transfer has an appealing advantage: it will generally take you to your hotel without dropping off other guests along the way. After a long flight, that can feel well worth the extra cost, particularly if the resort is some distance away or you're travelling with children and lots of luggage.

But you don't automatically need a private car. If your hotel is close to the airport and the shared transfer goes straight there, or makes only a brief stop, the less expensive option may suit you perfectly well.

Before booking, check what transfer is actually included, whether it stops at other hotels and what happens if your incoming flight is delayed. If you're bringing a pushchair or stroller, golf clubs or other bulky luggage, or need a child car seat, confirm the arrangements in advance with both the airline and the ground-transfer provider.

Your honeymoon starts before you reach reception

The best flight isn't necessarily the cheapest one or the one that lands earliest. What matters is whether the flight, the connection and the final journey to your hotel give you the start to your time together that you're hoping for.

Before you confirm the booking, ask one question beyond “What time do we land?”: “When will we actually reach the hotel — and what will be available when we arrive?”

It's surprisingly easy to overlook that part when you're already imagining the beach.

Flying with a stroller: will you get it back during a connection?

On many airlines, you can keep your stroller until you're about to board. **But handing it over at the gate doesn't guarantee you'll get it back when you change planes.** It may be sent straight to your final destination. That matters if you're travelling to a wedding abroad or taking your little one on your honeymoon. A long connection in Dubai, Doha or Istanbul can be tough with a tired child in your arms.
