On many airlines, you can keep your stroller until you're about to board. **But handing it over at the gate doesn't guarantee you'll get it back when you change planes.** It may be sent straight to your final destination. That matters if you're travelling to a wedding abroad or taking your little one on your honeymoon. A long connection in Dubai, Doha or Istanbul can be tough with a tired child in your arms. Ask this before you hand over your stroller Dubai, Doha and Istanbul: three different situations When your stroller goes straight to your destination On many airlines, you can keep your stroller until you’re about to board. But handing it over at the gate doesn’t guarantee you’ll get it back when you change planes. It may be sent straight to your final destination. That matters if you’re travelling to a wedding abroad or taking your little one on your honeymoon. A long connection in Dubai, Doha or Istanbul can be tough with a tired child in your arms. Check it in with your bags or keep it until boarding? If you won’t need your stroller at the departure airport, you can check it in with your other hold baggage, subject to the airline’s instructions. Some airports will ask you to take it to a separate oversized-baggage counter. Once you’ve handed it over, you’ll be without it for the rest of your time at that airport. If your child is asleep in the stroller, or there’s a long walk to the departure gate, keeping it with you may make more sense. Many airlines let you use it until the gate or aircraft, where you fold it and hand it to staff. Some compact folding strollers can even travel in the cabin if they meet the operating airline’s hand-baggage rules. Check whether it counts towards your hand-baggage allowance; it isn’t automatically an extra free item. Ask this before you hand over your stroller If you’re changing planes, knowing that you can take the stroller to the gate is only half the answer. At check-in, ask: “We’re connecting in Doha. Will we get our stroller back there, or will it be checked through to our final destination? Where should we collect it?” Ask staff to confirm what should happen on your actual route. Check the destination printed on the stroller’s baggage tag, too — but don’t assume the tag alone tells you exactly where it will be handed back. Depending on the airline and airport, you might collect your stroller beside the aircraft, from the usual baggage belt or in the oversized-baggage collection area. During a connection, it may simply continue to your final destination. These are strollers provided for use at the airport. Your own stroller may be travelling on to your destination. Qatar Airways — Doha (DOH): In June 2026, Hamad International Airport announced complimentary child strollers for use in the terminal. Check whether the service is still available before relying on it. An airport stroller is not the same as getting your own checked stroller back during the connection. Turkish Airlines — Istanbul (IST): Subject to its conditions, Turkish Airlines lets passengers take a stroller as far as the aircraft. Ask whether yours will be returned during your connection. And don’t be misled by the name iGA Buggy: at Istanbul Airport, this is an electric vehicle for transporting passengers, not a baby stroller you can borrow. When your stroller goes straight to your destination Carrying a sleepy child and your hand luggage across a large terminal can turn even a simple connection into hard work. A baby carrier that suits you and your child can be a useful backup. You could also check whether the connecting airport provides strollers to borrow, but don’t count on one being available or suitable for your child’s age. Not every airport stroller is appropriate for a baby who cannot yet sit unaided. Keep nappies, wipes and anything else you’ll need during the flights and connection in your permitted hand luggage. Don’t put them in the stroller bag that goes into the hold. At your final airport, if the stroller isn’t waiting by the aircraft or on the regular baggage belt, ask where oversized baggage is collected. It may be waiting there. What matters isn’t just where you hand over your stroller. It’s where — and when — you’ll get it back. Airline rules and airport services can change. Before travelling, check the arrangements for your actual itinerary with the operating airline and connecting airport.
