Bridal Hair and Make-up for Your Wedding Abroad

Every bride is beautiful on her wedding day, not least because of the happiness that shines through. The day itself passes so quickly, but the memories stay with you forever — and so do your wedding photographs.

Every bride is beautiful on her wedding day, not least because of the happiness that shines through. The day itself passes so quickly, but the memories stay with you forever — and so do your wedding photographs.

That’s why it’s worth giving some thought to how you’d like to look. Your partner will almost certainly think you’re beautiful whatever you choose, but what matters most is that you feel radiant, comfortable and truly yourself. And if you love what you see in your wedding photographs years later, all the better.

Would You Rather Do Your Own Hair and Make-up?

You know what suits you, and perhaps nobody does your hair and make-up quite the way you like it. If you’re confident doing both yourself, that’s wonderful. But you might prefer to relax on such a special day and let someone else take care of you.

There’s no right or wrong choice. It’s entirely up to you.

Just bear in mind that the weather and light at your wedding destination may be different from what you’re used to at home. Wind, humidity or heat can affect how well a hairstyle holds, while different lighting can affect how your make-up comes across on camera.

That doesn’t mean you automatically need heavier make-up or a special hairspray. It’s simply worth thinking about the look you want to achieve and, if you’re using professionals, discussing it with them beforehand.

Let the Professionals Take Care of You

If you’ve decided to have your hair and make-up done professionally, our advice is to prepare photographs of the styles you have in mind.

Send them to your hairstylist and make-up artist well before the wedding so they know what you’re hoping for. Keep the pictures on your phone too, or take printed copies if you prefer.

Everyone has different tastes, and a professional may have a slightly different idea of what would suit you. So don’t leave everything to guesswork.

Show them what you like, share your vision and listen to their professional suggestions about how best to achieve the result.

Sometimes one good photograph says more than a thousand words.

Hair and Make-up at Tropical Resorts

Some tropical and island resorts have a spa or beauty salon that also offers bridal hair and make-up services.

This can be wonderfully convenient. There’s no need to travel anywhere, and you can enjoy getting ready without leaving the hotel.

Before making arrangements, though, check exactly which services the salon offers, whether an appointment is available for your wedding day and whether the stylist’s work matches the look you have in mind.

You may prefer to use your own hairstylist or make-up artist from outside the resort, particularly if you’d like to get ready in your hotel room.

In that case, speak to the hotel before booking anyone.

Some resorts have specific rules about outside suppliers, often for security or operational reasons. They may require advance permission or ask for details of the professional who will be visiting. Some also charge an additional outside vendor fee for using a supplier who isn’t part of the hotel’s own team.

Other hotels may have no such restrictions or charges.

The important thing is to check the arrangements in advance. Ask the hotel or your wedding coordinator who is allowed to enter the property, whether the stylist can come to your room, where your preparations can take place and whether there are any additional fees.

It’s a small detail that’s much better sorted out before your wedding morning.

Hair and Make-up in the Mediterranean

If you’re getting married in the Mediterranean, you may be able to arrange for a hairstylist or make-up artist to come directly to your hotel room on the wedding day.

Alternatively, you might visit a local salon and have everything done there. It depends on the destination, the venue and the professionals you’ve chosen.

A hair and make-up trial may also take place at the salon, where the stylist has all their equipment to hand and can work out the details before your wedding.

Whether you’re getting ready in a salon or in your hotel room, the same advice applies: show your hairstylist and make-up artist photographs of the look you’d like.

It’s much easier to agree on the details when you can both see exactly what you mean.

Photos That Show What You Have in Mind

As we’ve mentioned, good reference photographs can make a real difference when you’re arranging your bridal hair and make-up abroad.

Instagram can be a lovely source of inspiration, but sometimes photographs of yourself are even more helpful.

Some brides arrange a hair and make-up trial at home with a hairstylist or make-up artist they already know. Once they’re happy with the result, they take plenty of photographs from different angles — from the front, the sides and the back.

This gives the professional at your wedding destination something particularly useful to work with.

Instead of seeing a hairstyle or make-up look on a model, they can see how it looks on you, with your own hair, features and skin.

Of course, photographs can’t guarantee an identical result. But they can help you explain exactly what you’re hoping for and make it easier for both of you to understand each other.

A Trial Before the Wedding

Would you feel more comfortable trying your chosen hairstyle and make-up before the wedding day?

You may also be able to arrange a trial once you’ve arrived at your destination, provided your schedule and the salon’s availability allow it.

A trial gives you an opportunity to see how the finished look feels, explain what you like and mention anything you’d prefer to change.

You can also find out whether the hairstyle feels comfortable and looks the way you imagined.

A trial isn’t essential, and it won’t be possible everywhere. But if you have a particular look in mind, it can give you welcome peace of mind ahead of your wedding morning.

Whatever you decide, we hope you enjoy every moment of your wedding and your time abroad with the person you love — and feel wonderful throughout.
