What Shoes to Wear to a Beach Wedding: From Sand to Stone Streets

Those shoes look lovely. Now imagine walking in them across soft sand, with a heel sinking at every step. The view from the shop mirror suddenly seems a lot less useful.

Those shoes look lovely. Now imagine walking in them across soft sand, with a heel sinking at every step. The view from the shop mirror suddenly seems a lot less useful.

At a destination wedding, what matters isn’t only where you’ll stand for the ceremony. It’s also how you’ll get there and where you’ll go for photographs afterwards. The ground underfoot might change from sand to a terrace, steps or old stone streets. Your shoes need to suit the journey as well as your outfit.

What works on paving may sink into sand

A narrow stiletto heel concentrates your weight on a small area, which makes it more likely to sink into loose sand. Well-fitting sandals, suitable flats or lower, wider heels may be easier to manage. But even block heels, wedges and platforms can sink into deep sand. There’s no single style that works on every beach.

On a beach in Mauritius or Zanzibar, you might like the idea of going barefoot. First check the actual ground and what the venue allows. Sand can become hot or contain sharp stones, and you may have to cross paving on your way to or from the ceremony. Shoes for those stretches can be useful.

And those pretty barefoot sandals? They’re usually foot jewellery, not protective footwear. Without a sole, they won’t protect your feet from hot sand or anything sharp underfoot.

Santorini terraces, Trogir streets and Tuscan gardens

A firm terrace in Santorini may give you more choice than a sandy beach. Elegant shoes with narrower heels might work for the ceremony. But there may also be steps, smooth stone or sun-warmed paving to negotiate. Shoes that feel comfortable while you’re standing still aren’t necessarily the best choice for walking to your photo locations.

Think of Trogir in Croatia. A ceremony in a historic setting could be followed by portraits among the old town’s uneven stone streets. Shoes that were fine on a firm floor can suddenly make you watch every step. And if part of the photography takes place on a boat, there’s yet another surface to consider.

Tuscan gardens bring a different challenge: grass and gravel paths can catch a narrow heel or let it sink. So before deciding what to wear, find out not only what the ceremony area is like, but also how you’ll reach it and where you’ll take photographs.

One pair for the ceremony, another for walking?

Why not, if it helps? You don’t have to give up shoes you love just because you’ll be walking over stones later. A second, more comfortable pair could make sense. Equally, if one pair works throughout the day, there’s no reason to pack another.

Try new shoes well before you travel. Walk around in them for a while and check that they fit, stay secure and don’t rub. Don’t rely on painful shoes becoming comfortable simply because you’ve worn them for longer.

There’s another detail worth remembering: changing heel height can change where a long hem falls. If a dress has been fitted for high heels, switching to flats could leave you stepping on the fabric. Change from flats to higher heels and the hem may sit higher than you intended. Try both pairs with the outfit before the final fitting.

Colour and style are your choice

White wedding shoes aren’t compulsory. You might prefer a bold colour, simple sandals or canvas shoes. What matters is whether you like them and can actually wear them on the ground you’ll be walking over.

When packing for a wedding abroad, make sure to give delicate shoes some protection against scuffs or being crushed. Wrapping them or stuffing them with a little padding to help them keep their shape may be enough; a sturdier box is another option if there’s room.

Whatever you choose, your first steps towards the ceremony should be about the wedding, not about fishing a heel out of the sand.
