Who Is a Symbolic Beach Wedding Right For?

You can already picture it: bare feet in the sand, the sea behind you and the person you love standing beside you. But then real life gets in the way. Perhaps you need to get legally married at home. Perhaps you've already had your wedding, but the ceremony by the sea is still the one you dream about.

You can already picture it: bare feet in the sand, the sea behind you and the person you love standing beside you. But then real life gets in the way. Perhaps you need to get legally married at home. Perhaps you've already had your wedding, but the ceremony by the sea is still the one you dream about.

Someone suggests a symbolic wedding. And you wonder: Wouldn't that just be a pretend wedding?

Not in the slightest. A symbolic beach wedding can be one of the most meaningful days of your life, whether you've already said your legal vows, plan to do so later or don't plan to marry legally at all.

A Symbolic Wedding Isn't a Pretend Wedding

There is an important distinction: a symbolic ceremony does not, on its own, make you legally married. A legal marriage requires the formalities that apply to you and the place where it takes place.

But the legal status of a ceremony and its personal meaning are two different things. You can have all the right paperwork and still wish you had taken more time for the words you wanted to say to each other. Equally, you can stand together on a beach, exchange vows that mean everything to you and know exactly what that moment is — without claiming it is a legal marriage.

Our experience organising weddings taught us that the official ceremony and the moment a couple treasures most don't always happen on the same day. That's one of the wonderful things about a symbolic wedding: it gives you room to celebrate the way you want to.

So when does it make particular sense?

1. You're Legally Married at Home, but Still Dreaming of a Beach Ceremony

Sometimes getting married at home is simply the most practical choice. It might be a quiet legal ceremony with two witnesses, or a big traditional celebration with family and friends.

That day might have been lovely. It may also have been rather different from what you imagined when you dreamed of exchanging vows with the ocean behind you.

Weddings can quickly become a whirlwind of logistics. There are dates to fit around, relatives to consider and arrangements to make. Work, pregnancy, family expectations or a change of plans can all affect how the day unfolds. Sometimes, in the middle of looking after everyone else, a couple barely gets a moment to themselves.

Already being married doesn't mean you have to give up the ceremony you've always wanted.

You could have it as part of your honeymoon: on a beach in the Maldives or Zanzibar, with the waves in the background and no seating plan to worry about. Just the two of you, the setting you've imagined and the promises you want to make to each other.

And the order can be reversed. You might exchange personal vows by the sea first, then have your legal wedding at home later. There's no single right order. Just be clear about when you'll actually be legally married, and make the necessary arrangements separately.

One practical point is worth checking before you book. If you're counting on a particular hotel's newlywed benefit, read the terms of that specific offer. Some require a marriage certificate or travel within a certain period after the legal wedding. There's no reason to arrange your entire celebration around a supposed universal rule about honeymoon benefits.

2. You Want to Celebrate With Your Family — and Have a Wedding Just for the Two of You

Imagine that your heart is set on a ceremony on a beautiful beach. But your grandparents aren't up to a long flight, some friends can't travel and your family is looking forward to celebrating with you at home.

Do you abandon the beach wedding? Or go without people you would have loved to have there?

You don't have to choose between the people you love and the place you've dreamed of.

You might have a legal wedding and a wonderful family celebration at home, then make the beach ceremony your own quiet occasion, perhaps with just the two of you. Or take a small group of loved ones abroad and celebrate with everyone else once you return.

This is precisely why we like the idea of two celebrations. Each can give you something different. At home, there's the gathering around a table, the family traditions and the pleasure of having your favourite people together. On the beach, there's time and space for a more intimate exchange of vows. Neither occasion has to diminish the other.

And two celebrations don't have to mean organising two enormous weddings.

A relaxed post-wedding celebration can work beautifully. When you're back from the Maldives or Zanzibar, invite your friends round, show them the photos and video from your beach ceremony and tell them all about the trip. The people who couldn't be there can still share in the happiness of what happened.

You're not getting legally married twice. You're giving yourselves two ways to celebrate the same love — and making room for the people and moments that matter most.

A symbolic ceremony doesn't have to accompany a legal wedding at all.

Perhaps you've been together for years. You've shared wonderful times, weathered difficult ones, perhaps raised children and built a life together. Then an anniversary comes around, or a trip together gives you the chance to ask: wouldn't it be lovely to say those promises to each other again?

Renewing your vows on a beach can be a beautiful way to mark how far you've come. You don't need to marry each other all over again to celebrate the relationship you already have.

In fact, those words can mean even more after years together. You understand what it means to stand by one another because you've actually done it.

A symbolic ceremony can also be right for couples who simply don't want a legal marriage, or who cannot arrange one in their chosen destination under the rules that apply to them. Legal options vary between countries and individual circumstances, including for some same-sex couples. A symbolic ceremony isn't automatically their only possibility — but it may still be exactly the celebration they want.

For some people, a commitment ceremony is the right expression. For others, it's a vow renewal or an anniversary celebration. These aren't quite the same occasion, and they don't have to be. What they share is the freedom to mark a relationship with words and gestures that are genuinely your own.

Maybe you don't want another certificate, another set of formalities or even something you would call a wedding. Just the sea, the person you love and a promise worth remembering.

There's nothing pretend about that.

Make Your Wedding Your Own

It's surprisingly easy to start planning a wedding around other people's expectations: the guest list, family traditions, dates that suit everyone and an idea of what a wedding is supposed to look like.

But your story doesn't have to fit into a single day or a single kind of ceremony.

You can marry legally at home and celebrate on the beach. You can have one occasion with family and another just for yourselves. Or you can renew your vows without another legal wedding at all.

Be clear about what you need to do legally, and then give some thought to what you truly want to experience. Those two things may happen in the same place — or they may be the best parts of two different days.

Whatever you choose, we hope your wedding or celebration is beautiful, deeply personal and exactly as you've imagined it.
