Check the whole journey, not only the first flight Final checklist before departure Your carry-on is not simply a smaller version of your suitcase. Start with the things you cannot afford to lose access to during the journey. And if you are flying for a destination wedding, that includes your wedding rings, your main wedding outfit and anything else that the ceremony or photography genuinely depends on.Liquids, batteries and the rest of your travel kit come after that — and within the rules that apply to the airports, airlines and transfers on your actual itinerary.Your ceremony may be in the Seychelles while your checked baggage ends up in Greenland. That is not a prediction that your bag will go missing. It is simply a useful way to separate things that are inconvenient to lose from things that could stop the journey or undermine the reason you travelled in the first place. You can manage without a book or travel pillow. A missing travel document, essential medication or wedding ring is a different problem. So before you start moving random items from the large suitcase into the small one, ask a better question: what would happen if I could not get to this item during the journey or after arrival?1. What you need within reach so the journey can continueStart with the things that would stop you travelling or make a problem much harder to solve if you suddenly lost access to them:travel documents and any documents required for your route;payment cards, a sensible amount of cash and a backup way to pay;your phone and basic charging equipment;essential medication in the quantity, packaging and with the documentation appropriate to your journey;keys, valuables and anything that would be genuinely difficult to replace at the destination. There is no single list that is right for every traveller. The useful test is simple: would losing access to this item stop the journey or seriously complicate solving a problem? If the answer is yes, do not leave it dependent solely on checked baggage. Also remember that an airline may sometimes require a larger cabin bag to be placed in the hold for operational reasons. Keep travel documents, essential medication, valuables, power banks and spare batteries organised so that you can remove them quickly if the airline asks you to do so. 2. What you need with you because of the wedding or photo shootIf the trip includes a wedding ceremony or a wedding photo shoot, ordinary travel essentials are only part of the story. You also need to protect the items without which the event itself could not go ahead as planned.Pay particular attention to:wedding rings;the wedding dress, suit or other irreplaceable wedding outfit;accessories without which the planned ceremony or photography would be materially compromised;original ceremony documents where the destination or process requires them. This does not mean that every airline will automatically accept a wedding dress or garment bag in the cabin. What is possible can depend on the airline, aircraft, fare or product you bought, and any onward segments. Arrange or verify the transport of important wedding attire before travel for every relevant flight and onward transfer. Do not make checked baggage your only plan.Folding a dress, choosing a garment bag, asking about a wardrobe, using an overhead bin and planning destination pressing or steaming all deserve their own guide. For this checklist, one principle is enough: the ceremony or photo shoot should not stand or fall with one checked suitcase. What you need but must verify before travelSome items are important and still subject to security or transport restrictions. Do not treat them as ordinary packing choices. Check the current rules for the journey you are actually taking.Liquids in your carry-onAirport security rules for liquids depend on the airport and screening regime. As one useful example, under the standard EU airport-security process, liquids are generally limited to individual containers of no more than 100 ml and placed in one transparent resealable bag with a maximum capacity of one litre.Where a container-size limit applies, the size of the container matters — not just the amount left inside it.But do not assume that the procedure at your first airport will be identical everywhere else. Check the current instructions for your departure airport and every transit security point that matters to your itinerary, including the return journey where relevant. Essential medicines, baby food, liquids needed for special dietary reasons and duty-free purchases can be subject to separate conditions, so verify the rules that apply rather than treating any exception as automatic or unlimited.Essential medicationKeep essential medication accessible, but check what your actual journey requires. Quantity, packaging, documentation, storage, airport security and destination or import rules can differ. If your medication has special handling needs, confirm them before you travel rather than relying on a generic packing list.Power banks and spare batteriesPower banks and spare lithium batteries belong in carry-on baggage rather than checked baggage under current passenger-safety guidance. Protect their terminals against short circuit — for example with the original packaging, terminal covers, a suitable case or appropriate insulation.Airline limits or approval can depend on capacity, quantity, configuration and the type or condition of the battery. For a large, unusual, specialist or damaged battery, check directly with the carrier. If your cabin bag is taken from you and placed in the hold, remove power banks and spare batteries when instructed to do so. 4. What makes the journey more comfortable if there is roomOnce the critical and regulated items are dealt with, use the remaining space for comfort. What is useful depends on the length of the journey, your own needs and the space you have left. You might want:a light layer for different temperatures on the aircraft, in terminals or during transfers;headphones and downloaded music, podcasts, films or reading;a pen;an eye mask or travel pillow;a small amount of personal-care kit within the liquid and security rules that apply to your route.None of these is universally necessary. Something that is optional for one traveller may be practically important for another. The point is not to dismiss comfort; it is to make sure comfort does not push out the things the journey or wedding genuinely depends on. 5. Check the whole journey, not only the first flightThere is no universal cabin-bag size, weight or number of pieces that works across every airline. Allowances can depend on the carrier, fare or product, route, cabin, traveller status and aircraft. Before you close the bag, check:the size, weight and number of carry-on items allowed by every relevant carrier;whether your fare includes a separate smaller personal item;the operating airline's rules where a different airline sold the ticket;connection rules and separately booked sectors;baggage limits on any onward small aircraft, boat or local transfer that matters to the trip;the agreed transport plan for a wedding dress, suit or other special item;what you would need to remove quickly if the airline requires your cabin bag to go in the hold.If your bag is accepted on the first flight, that does not mean it meets the rules for every later part of the journey. Final checklist before departureWhat should stay with youtravel documents and any required ceremony documents;money and a backup way to pay;phone and basic charging equipment;essential medication;keys and irreplaceable valuables;wedding rings;the wedding dress, suit and irreplaceable accessories according to a transport plan you have already checked. What you need to verifyliquid rules and any relevant conditions at every airport or security point that matters to the itinerary;medication documentation, storage and transport requirements;power-bank and battery rules, including any airline approval that may be needed;cabin-bag dimensions, weight and number of pieces for every relevant carrier;transport of wedding attire or another special item;limits on local flights, boats and other onward transfers where applicable. What to add if there is rooma light layer;reading or downloaded entertainment;headphones and a pen;an eye mask, travel pillow and other personal comfort items. When you pack, do not begin with everything that might be nice to have. Begin with what would happen if you could not get to it when you needed it.Pack by consequence first. Pack for comfort second.
