Choosing the Right Recording on YouTube Or Just Let the Sea Provide the Soundtrack You’ve found the wedding setting you’ve dreamed of. The person you want to marry is beside you, the first notes of a favourite song begin, and you take those few steps towards saying ‘I do’. Music can make an already emotional moment even more moving. For a wedding abroad, you might choose the exact recording you love, have musicians play for you, or decide that the setting needs no music at all. Recorded Music Recorded music can work beautifully at a wedding ceremony, whether the venue has a small portable speaker or a full professional sound system. What matters is what the place can actually provide. You might choose three to five songs, for example, and tell your wedding coordinator which ones you’d like well before the day. The number and the arrangements depend on the venue and on how your ceremony will unfold. It’s worth asking exactly how the music needs to be supplied. Some venues ask for audio files; others have their own way of organising playback. Make sure the coordinator has the right recordings in a format their equipment can handle, and that someone has tested everything beforehand. Agree on a backup in case the equipment fails. Having a YouTube link or a personal music subscription doesn’t automatically give the venue permission to play the song at your ceremony. The lovely thing about recorded music is that you can have the songs you really want, in the versions you know and love. After all, not everyone can invite Ed Sheeran along to sing ‘Perfect’ in person. Choose what feels like you. It might be a romantic ballad, an instrumental piece, music from a film or even rock. There’s no rule saying a wedding abroad has to sound a certain way. Pay attention to the part of each song you actually want people to hear. Perhaps you’d like a track to start 32 seconds in, rather than at the beginning. Tell your coordinator and check whether that cue can be arranged. The same goes for fading a song out as you reach the front or bringing it to a close before the ceremony continues. If you plan to share your wedding video online, there’s one more thing to consider: copyright. Playing music during the ceremony, including it in a film and uploading that film can involve different permissions. Some uses may be covered by a platform’s licensing arrangements, but that doesn’t guarantee your video will stay untouched — it could be monetised, muted, restricted or blocked. Having a musician perform a familiar song live doesn’t automatically avoid the issue either. If you’re planning to publish your wedding film, discuss the music with your videographer and ceremony organiser in advance. Live Music Live musicians can bring a completely different feeling to a ceremony. In some destinations, the musical possibilities reflect the place itself: drums and dancers as you make your entrance in a tropical setting, an organ in a church in Rome, a singer with a guitar in Croatia, or perhaps a trio or a harpist on Santorini. Of course, what you can arrange will depend on the venue and the kind of ceremony you’re having. Musicians will usually have a repertoire of pieces they know well. You can choose from it, or, if you like their style, leave the selection to them. If there’s a particular song you’d love them to play, request it well in advance. They may need to prepare a new arrangement or rehearse it, and there could be an additional charge. Often, choosing from the music they already perform beautifully is the simplest solution. It depends on the local arrangements and, above all, on the ceremony you’ve planned with your coordinator. The first song might accompany your entrance. You could walk in together, or one of you might arrive first and wait for the other. And yes, the groom can have his own entrance song too — it isn’t a privilege reserved for the bride. A piece with an unmistakable opening works well here, so you’re not left waiting through a long introduction. If you’re at the front before the song finishes, it can simply fade out. When the person conducting the ceremony is speaking, or you’re making your vows, everyone needs to be able to hear the words. Whether music plays at any of those moments depends on the ceremony itself and the rules of the venue. Another song might celebrate the moment you’ve said ‘I do’. You could pick something joyful, such as Pharrell Williams’s ‘Happy’. Depending on your plans, you might also want music for signing any documents, congratulations, a first toast, cutting the cake or walking out together. One longer piece may be enough for several of those moments. And if a first dance is part of your celebrations, a slower song such as John Legend’s ‘All of Me’ could be lovely. Some venues, including certain settings on Santorini, have music they regularly use for ceremonies. If you like what’s offered, you may prefer to let the local musicians or coordinator guide the choices. They know what works in that particular setting. Choosing the Right Recording on YouTube YouTube can be useful when you’re deciding exactly which version of a song you want. Send your coordinator the full link, not just the title. Two recordings with the same name can sound very different, and this isn’t a moment when you want a surprise. Listen to the whole recording first. Check that it’s the performance you meant to choose, rather than an unexpected cover or a version with distracting sounds. The link tells your coordinator which recording you mean; it doesn’t guarantee the song can be played directly from YouTube or that the necessary permissions are in place. Agree on the actual playback method separately. Or Just Let the Sea Provide the Soundtrack One of the pleasures of getting married abroad is being able to shape so much of the day around what matters to you. That includes the music. You can leave it out altogether and let the waves provide the soundtrack if the setting and ceremony allow it. We hope your wedding becomes one of the days you remember most fondly. And if, years from now, a song from that day catches you by surprise, may it bring back all the emotion of those first steps towards ‘I do’.
