Best time to visit Mauritius: weather and which coast to choose

Mauritius is a year-round destination. But there's a catch to asking when the weather is best: on the same day, one beach can be sheltered, another can be windswept, and the hills inland can be covered in rain.

Mauritius is a year-round destination. But there's a catch to asking when the weather is best: on the same day, one beach can be sheltered, another can be windswept, and the hills inland can be covered in rain.

For a honeymoon or beach holiday, where you stay can matter just as much as when you go.

Mauritius in summer and winter: the evening-swim test

Mauritius is in the Southern Hemisphere. The island's summer, roughly November to April, is hotter and more humid. Its winter, June to September, is milder and often more comfortable for exploring or spending time outdoors. May and October are transitional months.

One of the easiest ways to picture the difference is to think about an evening swim. In the Mauritian summer, getting out of the pool in wet swimwear can feel wonderfully refreshing. In July or August, you might be more tempted to pull on a light layer after sunset than to jump back in.

Both are versions of a tropical holiday. It comes down to how much heat you enjoy — and what you want to do while you're there.

The milder months can be particularly appealing if you plan to explore the island or hold a ceremony on the beach without the full summer heat. Just don't overlook the wind when choosing your resort.

When is the best time to visit Mauritius?

November to April suits travellers who love tropical warmth, humid days and balmy evenings. Rainfall is generally higher in this period, particularly around February and March, but that doesn't mean every day will be washed out.

June to September brings milder temperatures and, on average, less rain. These months can be a lovely choice for an active holiday or an outdoor wedding ceremony. On exposed beaches, though, the south-east trade winds may be much more noticeable.

October and November can be especially appealing as Mauritius warms up again. October is among the drier months in the long-term climate records, and the island can be beautiful when the flowering trees are in bloom. Neither month comes with a guarantee of clear blue skies.

May and the second half of September are worth considering, too. Conditions can still be very pleasant, and you may find better-value stays. That depends on the individual hotel and dates, rather than any fixed price rule for the whole island.

Which coast should you choose? Look beyond the compass

In the Mauritian winter, the prevailing south-east trade winds make the position of your beach especially important. Parts of the north and west have more sheltered bays, while the east, south-east and some southern stretches tend to be breezier.

But don't write off an entire coastline. Two beaches quite close to one another can feel completely different.

Le Morne, in the south-west, is a perfect example. On one side of the mountain, the wind sweeps across the shore and attracts kitesurfers. On another, you may find welcome shelter. The mountain itself can even cast a pleasant shadow over some of the beaches for part of the day.

Then there's the coral reef. Imagine sitting beside a lagoon almost as still as a pond, while a few hundred metres away huge Indian Ocean waves crash against the outer reef. The spray can look as though it rises more than ten metres into the air. It's a spectacular sight — and a wonderful illustration of how a reef can change the sea conditions just offshore. Even a calm-looking lagoon can have currents, however.

So rather than choosing a hotel simply because it's on the north, south or west coast, look at which way its actual beach faces, how sheltered it is from the wind, and what the lagoon is like.

Does it rain much in Mauritius?

Spend most of your time on a sheltered beach, and you might think Mauritius hardly gets any rain at all. The reality is more varied.

The central highlands receive considerably more rainfall than some of the leeward coastal areas. Rain feeds the island's rivers and reservoirs, while the hills can hold cloud and wet weather over the interior.

That's why it can be raining inland while the sun is shining on the coast — and why guests staying in different parts of the island may remember very different weather from the same week.

Tropical showers sometimes pass quickly. At other times the rain can be heavier or last longer, particularly in February and March. A wetter month isn't necessarily a ruined holiday, just as a drier one isn't a promise of sunshine every day.

What about cyclone season?

The official cyclone season runs from 1 November to 15 May. That overlaps with one of Mauritius' busiest times for visitors, so the season itself is certainly not a reason to rule out a holiday.

You may hear a long-standing local account of roughly three stronger cyclone episodes in a season. That's local historical experience, not a measured claim that three severe cyclones strike Mauritius directly every year. Actual storm tracks and effects vary.

When a storm is farther away, conditions can differ considerably between one side of the island and another. But during a serious cyclone warning, follow the local authorities' instructions — it is not the time to drive across the island looking for sunshine. A powerful cyclone can temporarily close the airport and restrict movement.

The risk is real, but it needn't overshadow every plan for a summer holiday.

What about hotel prices and a beach wedding?

Mauritius' main visitor season is generally October to April. Based on long-standing experience with hotels on the island, November to March has often been the pricier period, especially around Christmas and New Year.

Sometimes May or September offers better value. There are exceptions, so always compare the actual dates and rates for your chosen resort rather than relying on an island-wide price calendar.

If you're planning a beach ceremony on a fixed date, ask the resort before booking whether there is an indoor or covered backup option, or whether the ceremony time could be adjusted if rain or strong wind arrives. Don't assume those arrangements are automatically available, even in a relatively dry month.

Choose your month — but choose your beach just as carefully. For the honeymoon you have in mind, a sheltered stretch of coast may make more difference than a few degrees on the thermometer.
