Have you invited people who simply can't make the trip? Or would you like a wider circle of family and friends to share the ceremony even though they won't be there in person? Have you invited people who simply can't make the trip? Or would you like a wider circle of family and friends to share the ceremony even though they won't be there in person?A wedding livestream is one of the simplest ways to let people who can't travel share the ceremony with you in real time. It doesn't have to become a television production. For a simple livestream, a phone set up properly on a stable tripod may be all you need. The important word is prepared. Your wedding ceremony isn't the moment to discover for the first time whether the connection, viewing link or sound actually works.Phone on a tripod or a professional livestream? If the livestream is simply a nice extra for a few people you care about, a phone can be perfectly adequate. A stable tripod, a viewing link set up in advance and someone who can start the livestream and check it briefly may be enough for a straightforward setup. If the livestream is genuinely important to family who can't be there, it's worth asking before you travel whether your resort, venue, videographer or a specialist provider offers professional wedding livestreaming. A professional setup may take the technical responsibility away from you and can offer better-controlled sound, several cameras, a recording or a backup connection. The biggest advantage may therefore be less about a prettier picture and more about not having to think about the livestream at all while you're getting married. Test the connection where the camera will actually beTesting the internet in your room or in the resort lobby isn't enough. You'll be livestreaming somewhere else — perhaps on a beach, in a garden or in another part of the venue where conditions can be very different.Don't rely on a 4G or 5G icon either. What matters for a livestream is a stable connection with enough upload speed. Test it where the camera will stand, ideally at roughly the same time of day and with the same phone you plan to use for the ceremony. Before you travel, check how your own mobile plan handles data in your destination: your roaming or international data allowance, any data limits and extra charges. A livestream can use several gigabytes in an hour, depending on the quality and settings. If you're livestreaming over mobile data, turn Wi-Fi offIf mobile data is the connection you've chosen for the livestream, turn Wi-Fi off before the ceremony and leave it off throughout the livestream.Ordinary resort Wi-Fi is shared with other guests. It may work perfectly well one moment and slow down as conditions change. And if your phone has connected to the network before, it can reconnect to that Wi-Fi even though mobile data was the connection you intended to use.We ran into this more than once on YachtWedding working trips to resorts. We'd be livestreaming something from the trip to Facebook or Instagram over mobile data, only for the phone to latch onto patchy resort Wi-Fi and the stream quality to drop. So for those livestreams we learned to switch Wi-Fi off.At client weddings, we didn't rely on that kind of uncertain connection. One client found out exactly why. Their beach ceremony was meant to be livestreamed over mobile data because Wi-Fi wasn't expected to reach the beach at all. But Wi-Fi was left on. During the ceremony, a single weak bar of resort Wi-Fi from the guest rooms happened to reach the beach, the phone connected to it and that faint connection couldn't carry the livestream. Roughly half the ceremony never reached the people watching online. That doesn't mean Wi-Fi is always the wrong choice. If the venue provides a properly tested, stable network — perhaps one prepared specifically for the livestream — it may be the best connection available. The point is to choose one tested connection and not leave the phone free to switch connections at the worst possible moment. Tell the relevant people in advance that you plan to livestream — your planner or coordinator, celebrant or officiant, photographer and videographer — and agree on a position that works for everyone. Also look at what the camera is facing. Strong backlight can turn a beautiful setting into a very poor picture.Don't film the ceremony into the sun, or your family may end up with a daguerreotype instead of a view of the two of you. That's exactly the sort of detail you want to discover during a test, not when you watch the recording after the wedding. Do a quick test runBefore the wedding, run a short test. Simply opening the app and seeing that it starts isn't enough.Check on another phone or computer that a guest can actually open the livestream. Make sure you can hear the words clearly, not just the music and wind. See what the picture looks like when people are moving. Check the battery or power supply, and make sure the phone isn't overheating during a longer livestream — particularly in direct sun.And give one person responsibility for starting the livestream, checking it briefly and stopping it afterwards. If the wedding really is just the two of you and you don't want to deal with a phone during the ceremony, that's another good reason to consider a professional setup. If privacy matters, test the viewer experience too. A link that's easy to share isn't necessarily the same thing as a genuinely private livestream. A livestream isn't your wedding videoA livestream and a wedding video do two different jobs. The livestream lets loved ones be with you now. Photographs and a wedding video preserve the day afterwards. So it makes little sense to sacrifice your photographer's or videographer's work for the sake of a phone on a tripod. And if somebody misses the livestream, loses their connection or the livestream itself drops out, a well-made wedding video still lets you share the experience later.A well-prepared wedding livestream has one particularly nice quality: during the ceremony, you barely have to know it's there. You get married, somebody else keeps an eye on the technology, and people who can't physically be with you can still share that moment as it happens. The phone can remain the least interesting participant in the ceremony. That's exactly where it belongs.
