Best time to visit Zanzibar: weather, rain and safari

January is often hotter than July in Zanzibar. But when you’re planning a honeymoon, that isn’t the difference that matters most. Think less about finding the hottest month and more about how much rain you’re happy to risk.

When should you go?

Zanzibar stays warm all year, but there are two relatively drier periods, and they feel quite different.

  • June to September: usually less rain and slightly milder temperatures. A good starting point if you want time on the beach, excursions and other outdoor plans. October can still be pleasant, though it’s a transition towards the next rainy season.
  • January and February: another relatively dry spell, but with more heat and humidity. If you love hot tropical weather, this may suit you better.

Both periods are better bets for dry weather, but a shower is still possible.

What about Zanzibar’s rainy seasons?

The long rains (Masika) usually run from March to May, with April often especially wet. If your trip depends on outdoor activities, these months carry a greater risk of disruption.

The short rains (Vuli) generally arrive between October and December. The name can be misleading: it’s the rainy season that’s shorter, not necessarily every downpour. Some tropical showers move through quickly and leave clearer skies behind; other spells can last longer, particularly during the main rains.

So a rainy season doesn’t mean it’ll pour throughout your holiday. Nor does a dry-season booking guarantee uninterrupted sunshine.

Planning a symbolic beach ceremony for a fixed date? Choosing a relatively drier month makes sense. Before booking, ask the venue whether it has an indoor or covered backup option, or whether you could change the ceremony time if it rains.

Zanzibar plus a Big Five safari

June to October is often a good time for wildlife viewing on mainland Tanzania too. You could combine a honeymoon on Zanzibar with a safari in search of the Big Five: lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino. Which animals you spot depends on the park, conditions and a bit of luck. Seeing all five is never guaranteed.

You can’t choose the weather you’ll get on a particular day. You can choose the month you travel — and that can matter far more than a few extra degrees.
