Six Practical Tips for Your Santorini Wedding What Will You Take Home from Santorini? Whitewashed houses clinging to the cliffs, the deep blue Aegean far below, and a horizon where the sea almost seems to meet the sky. You’ve seen Santorini in photographs. Now imagine standing on one of those white terraces, just moments away from getting married. But what does a Santorini wedding actually look like? Is it a beach wedding, or is the island really about those extraordinary cliffside views? What happens at the gazebo, how does the ceremony unfold, and what is worth thinking about before you fly? Come and picture the day with us. We’ve also got six practical tips to help you make it your own. A Cliffside Terrace or a Beach? Santorini isn’t a destination defined by endless stretches of white sandy beach. Its most recognisable sight is the volcanic caldera, with whitewashed houses and terraces perched on the cliffs above the sea. And that combination gives Santorini wedding photographs a character that’s hard to mistake for anywhere else. There is another side to the island, of course. Santorini has volcanic beaches, often with dark sand or pebbles. You’ll find them around Kamari, Perissa and Monolithos, for example. Black sand, the sea and a more open coastline have an atmosphere of their own. It’s simply a very different picture from a white terrace high above the caldera. For us, there’s something special about those cliffs. The white architecture, the blues of the sea and sky, and the view out towards the islands create a setting that stays with you. It’s easy to see why photographs like these make couples dream of getting married in Santorini. And here’s a practical insight from experience: you don’t have to stay where you get married. You might prefer a hotel by the beach for your holiday but choose a caldera-view terrace for the ceremony. Or you might find a villa with the views you love and have your wedding day almost entirely in one place. Both approaches can work. What matters is knowing exactly where your ceremony will be, how you’ll get there and whether the venue can accommodate the kind of wedding you want. What Does a Santorini Wedding Terrace Look Like? Picture a white terrace on the edge of a cliff. At the far end stands a white wedding gazebo, or perhaps a simple wedding arch. Light curtains hang from its frame, with the sea and the caldera opening out beyond them. Some couples add flowers; others need only a few carefully chosen details. There might be a small table beneath the gazebo. It holds the rings, perhaps the bouquet, and later it may be where you cut your wedding cake. It’s practical, certainly, but it also becomes part of the scene against the white terrace and the blue sea. That’s part of the magic of the caldera: the setting needs very little help. The view is so striking that you don’t have to cover it with decorations. And where the railings are low or unobtrusive, the sea can seem to merge almost seamlessly with the terrace in your photographs. Every venue is different, though. One terrace may have a gazebo, another a simple wedding arch; some have more room for guests. Look at photographs of the actual venue you’re considering, not just the idea of a ‘Santorini wedding’. Your chosen music starts to play. Ahead is the white gazebo, with a sea so blue that, for a moment, it hardly seems real. In just a few steps, you’ll be ready to say ‘I do’. You can arrange your entrance in the way that feels right for you. Perhaps you’ll walk in together, hand in hand from the very beginning. Or you’ll arrive separately. One of you waits by the gazebo while the other approaches to the music. That first look can be one of the most moving moments of the whole day. Want to see each other for the first time only when the ceremony begins? Tell your wedding coordinator in advance. It affects where you’ll wait, how you’ll enter and when the music should start. For a legally binding civil wedding, an authorised officiant leads the ceremony at a venue approved for it. If you’ve chosen a symbolic ceremony, a celebrant takes that role. Your guests take their seats and the music fades. You turn towards one another and join hands. The sea is still there beyond the white houses, but suddenly the two of you are all that matters. Personal Vows, Music and the First Dance A few words of your own can bring something to a ceremony that no amount of decoration ever could. They don’t have to be a grand speech. Sometimes it’s enough to say something from the heart that everyday life rarely gives you the chance to say aloud. Talk through your vows beforehand, taking the type of ceremony into account. For a legally binding civil marriage, your personal promises don’t replace the required official part, but they can make the occasion more meaningful. A symbolic ceremony may allow a different kind of personal script. Then comes the kiss, the congratulations and the happiness of the people sharing the terrace with you. There might be a toast, the cutting of a cake or a first dance. Perhaps you’ll choose the song that was playing when you first met. And if you don’t want to dance, don’t. Your wedding day isn’t a checklist of traditions you have to perform. Choose the music for your entrance, the ceremony and any first dance in advance, and check how it will be played at your particular venue. It’s those small decisions that turn a spectacular backdrop into a wedding that feels like yours. Wedding Photographs A photographer will hardly be short of possibilities in Santorini. There are the white terraces and blue sea, little lanes between the houses and views from the villages on the caldera. Or you might choose a completely different scene, with the dark sand of a volcanic beach. But the most memorable photograph doesn’t have to be taken at a famous viewpoint. It might be the moment you laugh together in front of the gazebo, or the instant you finally relax after the ceremony. By then, whether the entire sea fits into the frame really isn’t the point. Would you like photographs away from the wedding terrace too? Agree on the timing and locations in advance, and make sure you have permission to use them. A beautiful white house or a church roof isn’t automatically a public photo location. If you’re dreaming of pictures at sunset, plan around the time of year, the position of your venue and your photographer’s availability. And What About the Paperwork? The important distinction is whether you’re planning a legally binding civil marriage or a symbolic ceremony. For a civil wedding, you need to arrange the relevant documents, marriage permission, authorised officiant, witnesses and an approved location with the competent local authority well in advance. A lovely gazebo and a heartfelt exchange of vows don’t, by themselves, make a marriage legally valid. When we used to organise weddings in Santorini, we planned a visit to the local office on a working day after the ceremony. We also allowed an extra working day in case the paperwork took longer than expected. That was a useful planning precaution, not a legal deadline that applies to every couple. Make sure you confirm the actual procedure and timing for your own circumstances before committing to non-refundable flights or onward travel. Six Practical Tips for Your Santorini Wedding 1. Bring your rings and chosen wedding outfit with you. It’s far nicer to spend your time on the island enjoying the occasion than worrying about finding the right rings or the wedding outfit you’ve pictured. If you’d rather shop there, check what’s available before you travel. 2. Consider flowers for the gazebo. A white wedding arch overlooking the blue caldera is beautiful in its own right. A few flowers can make it feel more personal. You don’t need masses of them; choose something you love that works with the setting. 3. Give all that white a little contrast. In Santorini, white is everywhere: the buildings, terraces, often the gazebo and perhaps your wedding clothes too. That’s why an extra colour can work so well. Cream, gold, pink, blue or purple — whatever suits you. A little contrast can give flowers and decorations a wonderful presence in your photographs. 4. Save on what doesn’t matter to you, not automatically on everything. Santorini has its own appeal, but that doesn’t mean every service labelled ‘luxury’ is worth buying. Decide what you’ll really care about: the venue, the photographer, the music, time together? Compare what you’re actually getting and the quality of the service, rather than focusing solely on the bottom line. 5. Dress in a way that feels like you. The white terraces look wonderfully elegant, but you don’t have to wear an elaborate outfit or spend the whole day in uncomfortable shoes. A more relaxed, personal style can be just right, provided it suits your venue and the type of ceremony. It’s your wedding, not a fashion show. 6. Think about the light and the sunset. Santorini can look extraordinary as the colours of the sea, buildings and sky begin to change. Talk to your coordinator and photographer about the ceremony and photo schedule. The season, direction the terrace faces, weather and access all make a difference. Good light is worth planning for — but nobody can arrange a sunset to order. What Will You Take Home from Santorini? There’s a lovely balance of elegance and ease to a wedding in Santorini. White houses, a view from the cliff, a few flowers, a favourite song and the person you’re about to say ‘I do’ to. It doesn’t need to be extravagant to mean everything. We hope your Santorini wedding is exactly the day you want it to be. And when you open your wedding album years from now, may the sight of the sea and that white terrace bring back, above all, the moment you stood there together.
