The Maldives stretch more than 800 kilometres (roughly 500 miles) from north to south. Imagine asking for one weather forecast for a road trip that long. You'd probably get a puzzled look — and a very reasonable question: "Which part?"

Yet that's exactly what we do when we ask, "Does it rain in the Maldives in July?" It depends where you're staying.

When is it driest in the Maldives?

It's warm all year, typically around 25–32°C. So when choosing your dates, rainfall usually matters more than temperature. The northeast monsoon is generally drier from January to March, while the southwest monsoon brings wetter weather from around mid-May to November. April and December are transition months.

And because the islands stretch across different latitudes, rainfall patterns vary from one part of the country to another. Long-term figures from the Maldives Meteorological Service offer a useful guide:

  • Northern atolls: January to March generally gives you a better chance of drier, sunnier weather. July has the highest average monthly rainfall.
  • Central atolls, including the Malé area: February and March are usually good choices, with January also relatively favourable. Rainfall tends to be higher in May and October–November.
  • Southern atolls: February and March are again relatively drier. May and October–November tend to be wetter, and the far south can see more rain in December and January too.

In other words, February and March are sensible starting points across the Maldives. The differences between atolls become especially useful when you're travelling at other times of year.

Does rain mean a ruined holiday?

Not necessarily. Tropical rain often arrives as a sudden, heavy shower, with sunshine between showers. On a hot day, it can even feel refreshing. And the rain can be surprisingly local: one little island may be getting soaked while another nearby is still in the sun.

Of course, not every shower passes quickly. The monsoon can also bring prolonged downpours, thunderstorms and strong winds that disrupt boat trips or plans for the beach. A brief tropical shower is one thing; a day of driving rain is quite another.

What if you'd rather spend less?

Don't rule out the wetter months. Some resorts offer lower rates or special deals during the wet season. Compare the same resort across different dates rather than assuming July or August will always be cheapest — school holiday demand can affect prices too.

If you're on a honeymoon with a flexible itinerary, a cheaper stay with a greater chance of showers may be a worthwhile trade-off. If you're planning a beach ceremony on a fixed date, the drier months are a more sensible starting point. Ask your resort in advance whether the ceremony could be moved to another time or sheltered location if the weather turns.

Weather doesn't run to a timetable. The climate is changing, and individual years don't always follow the averages. Use those averages to choose when and where to go, then compare what the resorts are charging. Blue skies, after all, aren't something you can book.

And then? Just go.
