Golden Hour at a Beach Wedding: When to Hold the Ceremony and Take Photos

The golden hour isn't the first hour after you say 'I do'. It's the light photographers look for when the sun is low — and, inconveniently, it won't rearrange itself around your wedding timetable.

The golden hour isn't the first hour after you say 'I do'. It's the light photographers look for when the sun is low — and, inconveniently, it won't rearrange itself around your wedding timetable.

On a beach at midday, strong sunlight tends to leave short, sharply defined shadows. Later in the day, the light often grows warmer and gentler. Longer shadows bring out the texture of sand and stone, and the folds of a wedding dress. A photographer can work with backlighting, changing colours and, as daylight fades, perhaps even silhouettes. The same stretch of beach can look remarkably different in the photographs.

Golden hour doesn't always last an hour

Despite its name, the golden hour isn't a fixed sixty-minute slot. How long that light stays useful for photographs depends on the latitude, time of year, exact location and the kind of pictures you're hoping for.

YachtWedding spent years organising weddings abroad and saw this contrast in practice: the ideal light for photos could last roughly 40 minutes in Trogir, Croatia, in August, but just over 20 minutes in Zanzibar. Those are historical working estimates, not fixed astronomical durations.

That is why simply telling your photographer to arrive 'an hour before sunset' isn't much of a plan. Where will the sun be? Will a building or headland block it? And where do you actually want to take the photographs? Those details matter as much as the published sunset time.

One island, very different light

Take Mauritius. Two stretches of coast can have quite different conditions on the same day: sunshine in one place, cloud and wind in another. The direction a beach faces, the view towards the horizon and even the position of a resort can change what is possible for your photographs. 'We're getting married in Mauritius' isn't quite enough information to plan the light.

This is where a photographer who really knows the venue earns their place. They may know when the sun disappears behind a building or a rock, which corners work well for backlit portraits, and whether there's enough time to reach another spot before the light changes. YachtWedding's experience led them to favour photographers familiar with the places where its weddings took place. Being based locally, though, is no substitute for actually knowing the location.

Santorini shows another side of the same idea. You might begin taking portraits while there is still plenty of daylight, then watch the colours and shadows shift as the sun drops. If the conditions are right, the session can finish with silhouettes against the evening sky. It is a sequence of different photographic moments, not one magic minute. Not every terrace has a clear view of the setting sun, and clouds can change the scene as well.

What if your ceremony can't take place at sunset?

For a destination wedding, there are really two times to consider: when you can hold the ceremony, and when the light will be right for the photographs you'd like. A legally recognised ceremony may depend on the venue, the person authorised to conduct it and local requirements. A symbolic ceremony still needs its own practical arrangements.

If the ceremony has to happen earlier, that needn't mean missing out on evening portraits. You can hold the ceremony at an available time, then arrange a separate portrait session with your photographer for later in the day. Allow for the journey or walk to the chosen spot, the time available for portraits and what the light might actually be like.

Your entire ceremony doesn't have to happen in golden light for you to take home photographs you love. You can't move the sunset. But you can plan around it.

How to Choose a Photographer for Your Destination Wedding

There are photographs you can arrange, and there are moments you only get one chance to capture. The glance between you just before the vows. A parent's face when the ceremony begins. The laughter that comes when everyone's nerves finally give way. Years later, you may struggle to remember which flowers were on the table, but those photographs can bring the whole afternoon back.

Beaches, iconic locations and different traditions. A wedding abroad opens up plenty of possibilities – but the travel and practical arrangements need thoughtful planning too.
